13 Mar 2009The latest days many SEO and marketing blogs have been buzzing about Facebook ads targeting and the various ways of reaching some of the over 175 million active users. There’s always a lot of discussions on which way the big social networks will take to monetize their traffic and the most debated recently have been Twitter. But Facebook’s solution is something that I think will definitely work. The planning interface is clean-cut and straight on, stripped down to the essential features needed to plan a targeted campaign with some of the most basic criteria.
Targeting can be done by:
Let’s take UK Facebook users as an example:
Targeting all UK Facebook users would mean reaching 15,435,940 users.

Slicing even more and adding an ethnic groups such as Polish people in the UK we pick “Polish” as a language and we get 27,640 people that will be seeing our ads.

Going 1 step further and picking all UK Facebook users who speak “Polish” and live in London we get 2,420 people seeing our ads. As an online marketer this means I can pinpoint my language target group down to their geographic location! I can slice even more and add “Education” and “Relationship Status” to get extremely narrow results but that will be very relevant for my product marketing.

Not all languages are available in Facebook ads targeting yet but I assume Facebook will add languages as this application matures. “Turkish” is another language available to target and choosing this we see that we can advertise to 10,380 Turkish-speaking UK Facebook users who are 18 years and older.

The Turkish community in Germany is huge (2.8 million people) and moving over to Facebook Germany we can just as quick set up an ad campaign reaching Turkish-speaking Facebook users in Germany. We would be targeting 32,120 Turkish-speaking in Germany this way and be up and running in minutes.

Finally, we can reach over 25% of the Latino community in Sweden by advertising with Facebook – picking people speaking Spanish in Sweden we get 22,960 people which speak Spanish as their mother tongue.

When creating our next multicultural online campaign here at Ad Sheik we will definitely add in Facebook as an option for finding the ethnic target groups online. I wouldn’t be surprised if conversion rates are higher for this channel than for many other traditional online channels.
